So you’d like to join a brass band? Brass bands need players of the following instruments:
- Cornet (B♭ and E♭)
- Tenor Horn
- Baritone (Horn)
- Tuba (E♭ Bass and B♭ Bass)
- Percussion including kit drums, timpani, and orchestral and melodic percussion.
At Feilding we have two bands, the senior band ‘Feilding Brass’, and our training band.
Both are based behind the Manawatu District Council building in Council Place, Feilding.
Players should have a minimum of five years brass playing experience or have passed grade 5 practical. It is not necessary for that experience to be on the instrument that you play in Feilding Brass.
Entry to the band is subject to availability of positions and the final decision is at the discretion of the Musical Director.
Feilding Brass rehearses from 7.30pm – 9.30pm on Wednesday nights from late January until late December. In preparation for contests those times may be extended, and there are usually additional rehearsals on Sunday afternoons.
The band does 10-20 performances a year. Performances are usually on a weekend, with the most common exception being Anzac Day which can fall on any day. At least a months’ notice is given for performances.
We do appreciate that people work flexible hours and days and try to make accommodations as we can, but in general players are expected to commit to 90% of rehearsals and all full-band performances.
Membership in the band is set by the Management Committee at the beginning of each year. Members are provided with an instrument and uniform.
No previous musical experience is required, although the ability to read music is beneficial. Children 9 and over, and adults are all welcome.
Training band rehearses from 5pm – 6pm on Monday nights during school terms. Lessons are held before rehearsal. The band does 1-2 performances a year which are arranged well in advance.
Members are provided with an instrument and uniforms, and new members are given some tuition.
